Why Settle for Surviving

Workplace Coaching

What is it?

Developed after years of experience working with leaders at the executive level, on the shop and office floor, and in between, workplace coaching is a process that moves performance improvement and leadership development from the classroom to the workplace to target specific improvement and development needs.

How does it work?

Workplace coaching involves three steps that provide a measured, steady approach to leadership development and improvement.

Step 1: Establish Expectations. Schultheiss works with the coaching candidates and their bosses to set performance or development expectations and identify success targets that are measurable, attainable, and important to the organization. This step may include gathering feedback from the candidate's staff and associates to help in identifying both current behaviors and more effective behaviors.

Step 2: Practice Effective Behaviors. Schultheiss works with the candidates to internalize effective behaviors and practice them on the job. Schultheiss provides feedback, provocative questions and assignments to allow candidates to strengthen their skills and continue to grow after the coaching process ends.

Step 3: Reinforce Improvement. Schultheiss works with the candidate's boss and the candidate to plan reinforcement for the behavior the organization needs.

When is it applied?

  • As a follow-up to a multiple-rater feedback process. Considerable investment is involved in providing 360o or 180o feedback. Workplace coaching focuses follow-up efforts to maximize the organization's return for its investment.

  • As an effective way to develop high-potential individuals. Workplace coaching is a powerful technique for developing those individuals with raw potential, but lacking in political skills, interpersonal skills, leadership skills or other skills that were not part of a candidate's technical training.

  • As a way to give new managers an effective start. In today's workplace few people have time to mentor newly-promoted managers. As a result, many develop bad habits that lead to employee-relations problems or disappointing results. Workplace coaching can provide the mentoring that makes new managers productive leaders.
